Best Newcastle Wedding Venues for Videography
A videographer's honest guide to the best wedding venues in and around Newcastle for getting stunning footage. Based on real experience filming at each location.
Venues we’ve actually filmed at
Every “best venues” list is written by someone who hasn’t set foot in half of them. This one’s different. We’ve filmed weddings at all of these and can tell you exactly what to expect from a videography perspective — including the things the venue brochure won’t mention.
Linden Hall, Northumberland
A country house hotel about 30 minutes north of Newcastle. The grounds are the star here — 450 acres of parkland that look incredible on camera in any season.
Best for video: The long driveway approach shot, outdoor ceremonies on the lawn, and the wood-panelled library for intimate moments. The landscaped gardens provide almost unlimited variety for couple portraits and b-roll without repeating backgrounds.
For the ceremony: The main function room has large windows on one side. In the afternoon, the light quality is beautiful but directional — we position carefully to avoid the subject being backlit.
Watch out for: The ceremony room can be dark in overcast conditions. We bring extra lighting as standard for Linden Hall bookings.
Season: Gorgeous year-round, but summer golden hour from the south-facing terrace is exceptional.
The Victoria Tunnels, Newcastle
Underground tunnels from the 1800s, converted into an event space. Atmospheric doesn’t begin to cover it.
Best for video: The tunnel entrance reveal — walking through the original archway into the candlelit space is one of the most cinematic moments we’ve captured anywhere. The contrast between raw brick walls and formal wedding attire creates images that look genuinely unlike any other venue.
For the ceremony: The tunnel’s natural acoustics carry speech beautifully. Couples often choose live string music precisely because it resonates so well in the space.
Watch out for: Very low light throughout — this is not a natural-light venue. We shoot with fast lenses (f/1.4) and bring LED panels for key interview moments. We walk the space in advance to plan our lighting approach.
Season: The Tunnels are their own self-contained world and look incredible in every season. The contrast with a winter day outside makes winter weddings here particularly striking.
Healey Barn, Northumberland
A converted barn with floor-to-ceiling windows and a separate ceremony space. Modern rustic done right.
Best for video: Natural light floods the ceremony room from three sides. The barn reception has incredible atmosphere once the fairy lights come on at dusk — that transition from daylight to warm evening light is something we always plan around.
For the ceremony: The ceremony barn has the best natural light of any venue we’ve filmed at in the North East. On a clear day, no supplementary lighting is needed. On overcast days, it’s still workable without modification.
Watch out for: The wind can affect audio during outdoor ceremonies in the courtyard. We always have backup indoor mic positions and a radio mic on the celebrant. The exposed rural location means weather changes quickly.
Season: Summer is the obvious peak, but autumn light at Healey Barn is genuinely beautiful — warm tones, soft angles, and the surrounding trees changing colour.
Matfen Hall, Northumberland
A Georgian country house hotel near Hadrian’s Wall with formal grounds, stone balustrades, and a chapel. One of the most photogenic exterior locations in the North East.
Best for video: The stone steps and entrance facade are iconic. The formal walled garden provides structured geometry that works beautifully as a backdrop for ceremony processions and couple portraits.
For the ceremony: The chapel is small and intimate — which means audio carries easily and lighting from the windows is concentrated and flattering. We position a camera on a balcony for the wide ceremony shot and a second camera in the aisle for close-ups.
Watch out for: The chapel has some challenging angles for a single camera setup. Multi-camera is strongly recommended here to ensure you don’t miss key moments.
Season: Matfen Hall is particularly beautiful in spring (March–May) when the formal gardens are in bloom.
Headlam Hall, County Durham
A Jacobean manor house in the Durham countryside. More intimate than some of the larger Northumberland venues, with beautifully proportioned rooms and a walled garden.
Best for video: The drawing room and library for couple portraits have genuinely beautiful natural light — original sash windows frame the subjects perfectly. The walled garden has an enclosed, timeless quality on camera.
For the ceremony: The civil ceremony room has good natural light and manageable proportions — not so small that cameras become intrusive, not so large that it loses intimacy.
Watch out for: Being in County Durham rather than Northumberland, it’s about 45 minutes from Newcastle city centre. Factor in travel for vendors coming from the city.
Season: Spring and autumn are the best seasons here — the countryside setting looks at its most dramatic outside of the flat green of high summer.
Close House, Northumberland
A golf resort and country house hotel with manicured grounds and views across to the Tyne Valley. One of the most flexible venues in the North East in terms of outdoor ceremony options.
Best for video: The view from the terrace — rolling fairways, mature trees, and on clear days a sweep across the Tyne Valley — is the best backdrop of any venue we’ve covered in Northumberland. Sunsets here in summer are spectacular.
For the ceremony: Multiple outdoor ceremony locations give flexibility depending on conditions. The venue team is experienced at last-minute changes between indoor and outdoor options if the weather turns.
Watch out for: The grounds are large and spread out, which means logistics on shoot day require planning. We map our positions in advance so we’re not carrying equipment across the estate mid-shoot.
Season: Summer is the clear peak given the outdoor focus of the venue. The sunset potential from May–September is exceptional.
General notes on filming in the North East
Audio and weather: The North East has its own relationship with wind. We pack audio contingencies for every outdoor shoot — directional microphones that reject off-axis noise, radio mics for celebrants and couples wherever the ceremony location permits, and a protocol for moving indoors quickly if conditions deteriorate mid-ceremony.
Low-light venues: Several of the most atmospheric venues in the region — tunnels, barns, stone-walled rooms — present low-light challenges. We never rely on a venue’s existing lighting for key moments. Our kit includes fast prime lenses, portable LED panels that don’t affect the atmosphere, and we plan for conditions before the day.
Multiple locations: Many North East weddings move between venues — church ceremony, then reception venue — which adds travel time to the day. We plan for this by confirming the transition window with the couple, positioning crew in advance if the gap is tight, and knowing the fastest routes between venues.
Planning your venue choice
If you’re still choosing between venues, a conversation with your videographer before you book can be valuable. We’ve filmed at dozens of venues across Newcastle, Northumberland, Durham, and the wider North East and can tell you from experience what works on camera.
Some couples choose venues for the aesthetic in photos and then find the video is harder to make beautiful. Others choose venues that their videographer tells them are exceptional on camera and discover that the photography works brilliantly too. Getting both teams’ input before you commit isn’t overthinking — it’s good planning.
